Week 2: Numbers, Prices, Colors & Everyday Objects

Goal

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to count from 0–100, recognize common price phrases, name basic colors, and ask simple shopping questions politely.

Lesson 1 — Thai numbers 0–10

Thai numbers are practical immediately: markets, taxis, room numbers, phone numbers, prices, and time.

NumberThai scriptRomanizationPronunciation note
0ศูนย์soonlong oo sound
1หนึ่งneungoften becomes et in 11, 21, 31…
2สองsongrising tone
3สามsaamlong aa
4สี่siilong ii
5ห้าhaaalso used online as laughter: 555
6หกhokshort and clipped
7เจ็ดjetlike “jet”
8แปดbpaaetunaspirated b/p sound
9เก้าgaofalling tone
10สิบsipused for teens and tens

Culture note: Thai people often type 555 because the number 5 is pronounced ha. So 555 = hahaha.

Lesson 2 — Building 11–100

Thai numbers are mostly logical once you know the pattern.

ThaiRomanizationMeaning
สิบเอ็ดsip et11
สิบสองsip song12
ยี่สิบyii sip20
ยี่สิบเอ็ดyii sip et21
สามสิบsaam sip30
หนึ่งร้อยneung roi100

Two important changes:

  • 20 is ยี่สิบ (yii sip), not song sip.
  • Final 1 becomes เอ็ด (et) after ten: 11, 21, 31, etc.

Lesson 3 — Prices and shopping phrases

These are useful at markets, cafés, street food stalls, and transport counters.

Thai phraseRomanizationMeaning
ราคาเท่าไหร่ครับ/คะraa-khaa thao-rai khrap/khaHow much is it?
อันนี้เท่าไหร่ครับ/คะan nii thao-rai khrap/khaHow much is this one?
แพงไปphaeng bpaiToo expensive
ลดได้ไหมครับ/คะlot dai mai khrap/khaCan you discount?
เอาอันนี้ครับ/ค่ะao an nii khrap/khaI’ll take this one

Use bargaining carefully. It is normal in some markets, but not in convenience stores, malls, cafés, or places with printed prices.

Lesson 4 — Basic colors

Thai scriptRomanizationMeaning
สีแดงsii daengred
สีเหลืองsii leuangyellow
สีเขียวsii khiaogreen
สีฟ้าsii faalight blue / sky blue
สีน้ำเงินsii naam ngoendark blue
สีดำsii damblack
สีขาวsii khaaowhite

The word สี (sii) means color. Thai usually says “color red” instead of just “red.”

Lesson 5 — Everyday objects

Thai scriptRomanizationMeaning
น้ำnaamwater
กาแฟgaa-faecoffee
ข้าวkhaaorice / meal
โทรศัพท์tho-ra-sapphone
